Team DUMMY
Project Summary
Our team is developing a postpartum hemorrhage simulation model that is affordable, effective, and meets WHO guidelines.
Project Details
Our initial prototype consists of a realistic uterus of correct “feel” and location, as confirmed by multiple OB/GYNs. Additionally, we have integrated a simple circulatory system that simulates blood flow and pressure sensors that measure force applied to the uterus during compressions. Other organs, such as the colon and intestines, were also included.
We have since iterated upon our first model to meet WHO training simulation guidelines and improve the model’s reproducibility in low-income settings. As both external aortic compression and internal bimanual compression are critical procedures when treating PPH, we focused on creating a vaginal opening and cervix through which a fist can enter and practice the proper maneuvers. The new design also includes a simple blood reservoir and a foam body that encases all of the components.
Ultimately, our team is excited by the opportunity to improve maternal health outcomes in low-income communities through the development of a low-cost postpartum hemorrhage testing model. With our model, physicians, nurses, midwives, and other individuals involved in labor and delivery will be better trained to prevent and treat postpartum hemorrhage, saving thousands of women's lives each year.

Duke Chronicle article:
Smooth-on gels!
1) Dragonskin (best mimics skin)
2) EcoFlex 00-30 (great for mimicking organs)
- Make sure to mix parts A and B thoroughly for the best cure and product!
3) Slacker gel (mix with Ecoflex and Dragonskin to make it squishier and softer)
